Ashwagandha, what you should know.

ashwagandha roots

OK. We have to admit that this ancient root isn't exactly winning any beauty points. I mean we can all agree that it is not the most appetizing looking plant. But, in the case of Ashwagandha we think it is worth a second look and want to tell you why.

Need more info on the health benefits? Let's get into it.

What is it?

Simply put,  Ashwagandha is a plant that is native to India and Northern Africa. The root and berry of this plant have traditionally been used in Ayurvedic medicine to cure a variety of ailments like depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress and inflammation.  Ashwagandha is classified as an 'adaptogen' meaning that it can be used to help your body manage stress.

What can it do for me?

1) Reduce Blood Sugar Levels

Several studies have shown the  Ashwagandha may reduce blood sugar levels through its effect on insulin secretion and sensitivity.

2) Reducing Stress

Cortisol is commonly called the 'stress hormone". It is released by your adrenal gland in response to stress. Consistently elevated levels of Cortisol can lead to high blood sugar as well as increased fat storage.  Ashwagandha supports the reduction of Cortisol thus helping manage stress, anxiety and in some cases depression.

There have been several studies that show a reduction in anxiety, insomnia and stress in groups using Ashwagandha when compared to placebo groups.

3) Boost Brain Function

Ashwagandha promotes antioxidant activity that protect nerve cells from harmful free radicals. Studies have shown that Ashwagandha can support brain function, memory and reaction times.

We included this superfood in our Cacao Turmeric Blend because of Ashwagandhas ability to manage stress. We found that before bed we needed to sip on something soothing to get our zen on.  Ashwagandha has long been used as a natural relaxation remedy as well as providing a number of other benefits making it the perfect compliment to our night time cacao.
